What IS the Oxnard Traffic Initiative?
The Oxnard Traffic Initiative states that all intersections within a five-mile radius of a proposed development must be fixed before a project can be approved. If the intersections are not fixed and the City of Oxnard still wishes to proceed with the project, then the proposed development would have to be submitted to the voters for approval.
Opponents of this measure cite loss of tax revenue, developer fees and jobs as reasons to oppose this measure even though studies show that the revenues generated by new commercial projects don't make up for their greater environmental costs in electricity, water, waste, and public services. Some projects even have to be subsidized by the City. Opponents ignore the more serious impacts on Oxnard residents such as numerous adverse health effects (see studies below), wasting expensive fuel idling at congested intersections, the increase of 'road rage' incidents, etc. These impacts far outweigh any "economic gains" of unbridled development.
