The New Oxnard Traffic Initiative

The first traffic initiative failed to gather enough signatures to get on the November ballot. Although there were over 7,000 signatures turned in, about 30 percent were declared invalid. If you get the impression that 30 percent invalid signatures is a suspiciously high number, you are more than likely right.

So we try again. This time, with your help, we will go over the top.

We got a good start towards our signature goal on “Super Tuesday,” thanks to all who signed the petition and to the dedicated, tireless citizens who worked to gather your signatures.

For those who are unfamiliar with the language of the initiative, it quite simply restricts any large home or commercial development within five miles of an impacted intersection, and/or requires the developer or city to either mitigate the traffic problem or put it to the voters of Oxnard to approve or disapprove. Please note that places of worship are not included in the restrictions.

There are 25 impacted intersections in the City of Oxnard.

What does an impacted intersection mean to you? Beside short tempers which can lead to road rage, there are other very real issues, such as needlessly excessive amounts of smog and global warming gases being emitted each day into our atmosphere. Autos and trucks idling at impacted intersections for extended periods produce more and unnecessary air pollution. The two lung diseases--chronic bronchitis and emphysema as well as asthma and cancer of the lungs are just a few of the many problems linked to the breathing of traffic fumes. Although we are all affected, young children and the elderly are the most at risk.

For all of our sakes and for future generations, please support the “Oxnard traffic initiative.” Sign up for the future.
